Current Obsession… Yerdle

So the name is crazy, yes, but the idea behind it is brilliant – Yerdle.  In a nutshell, members post pictures of items they don’t need anymore, with a trade value attached, then others can ‘buy’ the items with the credits they have earned.  The currency is Yerdle Reuse Dollars (YRD), so no money changes hands, making it feel much like a swap.  Buyers pay shipping plus a small service fee to keep Yerdle up and running, and Yerdle provides the seller (aka Giver) with a UPS shipping label.

The beautiful part is that things junking up your hall closet can go on to be loved and used by someone who needs them, freeing up space for you – and you can get something you actually do need or want in return!

There are a few tricks to getting the most from the site:

  • Bundle.  The flat rate for shipping right now is $5, with a service fee of $1-3 depending on how new the item is, etc.  So those neon sticky notes that caught your eye aren’t going to be worth the shipping – by themself.  This is where “bundling” is key.  Always check the Giver’s profile, sometimes multiple pages long, for other items that you would like to get.  Bundling those sticky notes with a jacket for your husband and shoes for your daughter is much more cost-effective, and helps you get the most bang for your buck.
  • Act fast.  No, faster than that, seriously.  If you see a high-value item just posted or something that you’ve been really needing or wanting, grab it NOW.  The great deals will be scooped up in a matter of minutes, so often there isn’t time to mull over the color of that designer bag, or email with questions.  You can always “Reyerdle” something that you change your mind on – basically relist it on the site for someone else to buy, regaining the YRD you spent.  You would just be out the shipping & fees.
  • Go Pro.  Not the WNBA, Pro-Yerdler!  Members who have successfully given 25 items on the site are granted Pro-Yerdler status, complete with gold star! 😉  More importantly, Pros get special perks, like listing, giving, and referring incentives.  Yerdle loves its Pros, and it will be easier than you may think.

On that note, here are a few tips for being a conscientious Yerdler.  Not all are created equal, and there are certain habits that will make you a much nicer person to deal with, on Yerdle at least. 😉

As a Giver:

  • Ship quickly.  The deadline is 7 days, including weekends, so watch your dates.  If you don’t ship on time, you’ll receive a “flub” which will influence your ability to reach pro status.
  • Respond to emails in a timely manner.  Because of the oftentimes fast pace, it’s important to answer any questions about your listings right away.  Someone may request a measurement on a piece of clothing for example, and before you have a chance to respond, a different member may come along and buy it instead.  It happens, and I’ve been on both sides of that scenario, but we do our best to respond quickly.
  • Package well.  No one wants to receive a broken item, so be sure to package your shipments the way you’d want to receive them.  Use bubble wrap, newspaper, egg cartons, etc as a buffer around the item, and tape all edges of the box.  Pro-tip – create a free UPS account for clear label pouches to save yourself some tape!

As a Getter:

  • When you bundle on the desktop site, you will be paying shipping on the first item, and selecting “Local Pickup” for any others.  This way you only pay for one shipping label, and the other items can all go together.  Please keep in mind the general weight of your items.  There is a 10# shipping limit, so a year’s worth of magazines isn’t going to be able to bundle with a coffee maker for example. 🙂
  • The biggie when bundling – Please be sure to mark your pickup items as received as soon as you get the tracking info for the one you paid shipping on.  This is really tough when you’re new, because we don’t want to be taken advantage of – what if the giver doesn’t include one of the items, and I’ve already marked it received?!  While that seems like a worst-case scenario, rest assured that Yerdle support WILL take care of it.  Because of the exponential growth of the site, a response may take a few days, but they always come through. Love ’em!
  • Always thank your giver.  This is how feedback is received, but also spreads the love on the site.  It’s not a requirement, but a very nice gesture when you’ve gotten something you needed!  On that note, Yerdle does not have an enforcement policy like eBay for example, so do use caution.  If you see that someone has received negative feedback in the past, feel free to reach out to them, there may be two sides to that story.

Finally, for both Givers and Getters, familiarize yourself with the Yerdle Basics, which will cover everything better that I ever could here. 🙂

If you’d like to be a part of all this fun, come on in, the more the merrier!  And if you’d like to check out the items I’m personally giving away, you can see them here.

Is it time to cut the middle-man?

Hey all!  You know how excited we are when we get those great Swagbucks surveys that involve a product trial?  Well, I’m learning that you don’t have to wait for that magical survey to pop up.  By registering directly with market research companies, you can skip the middle-man (who of course takes his cut of the profit!).  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not losing the love for Swagbucks, but this is something I just can’t ignore.

I have a very timely example too.  I registered with a research company just this week, and got a call the very same day to participate in a beverage taste test.  The pay is $30, and it’s scheduled for tomorrow.  I’m super excited!  It’s not all in-person trials either, there are online focus groups as well, and from the sound of things, $30 is one of the lower paying ones. o.O

This is a trusted database of market research companies – GreenBook

You can search by state to register with the ones in your area for on-site work, or even other states for the online focus groups.  I trust you will find this helpful, fun, and profitable!

What I got for FREE today – June 11, 2015

Inspired by the Krazy Coupon Lady blog and the coupons I got from Influenster recently, I decided to try my hand at scoring some freebies this week.  From previous attempts, I know that success really comes down to whether your store has the exact items in stock or not.  It can be aggravating when it doesn’t pan out, but since I had a big trip to Wal-Mart in my future anyway, I went for it. To prep, I read up on the advertised sale/coupon combos over at KCL, and printed the coupons I could.  I skipped anything requiring shopping apps or coupons from the newspaper, because I’m just easing into this after all. 😉 My first two items didn’t pan out – my store had the items, but not the right size packages.  A little disappointing, but since I knew my Influenster items would be free, I kept rolling.  The rest of the items were available, and I actually walked out of the store having made money on them!  Here’s what I got:

Uncle Ben’s  – $1.98 – Free, thanks to Influenster

Ore Ida – $1.25 – Free, thanks to Influenster

AirWick Warmer only – $0.94, used a coupon for $1.25 off, made $0.31

Luzianne Sweet Tea – $0.98, used a coupon for $1.50 off, made $0.52

TruWhip Topping – $1.98, used a coupon for $2.00 off, made $0.02

I got these items for free and made $0.85 by buying them.

I got these items completely free and actually made $0.85 in the check-out isle!

Tell me a penny saved isn’t a penny earned. 😉 I also promptly scanned my receipt into the Savings Catcher app, so if there was a lower price in the area I will get the difference back. I’m planning more posts like this to bolster your thrifty side, as well as some time and money saving life hacks and write ups on my favorite ways to earn money from home.  If you’d like to be notified when I make new blog posts, please sign up!

June 18 edit – Coupons reset, and I was able to score these things again (minus the Influenster items), and made another $0.85 today. 🙂

Because I am an Influenster…

I got my first physical “VoxBox” this week!  If this sounds like a foreign language to you, read on. 🙂

A little bit of background: I found Influenster in February 2015, and set up an account just to see what I thought of it.  During account creation, I feared I wouldn’t be able to go very far with it – they had places to link Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, on and on, mostly companies I don’t have accounts with.  So I put in my YouTube and Google + handle and hoped for the best.

I browsed around some, wrote a couple reviews, and checked back every so often.  Within a couple weeks,  I had my first campaign invite.  The assignment was to write two eBay guides from their list of topics, and the payment was a $25 eBay gift card.  I jumped on it!  My activity was approved fairly quickly, and I got an invite for a VIP eBay guide campaign – write another two guides, and receive another $25 gift card.  I was starting to get pretty excited at that point, but wanted to be sure they would pay as promised.  They did send the gift card email a little over a month after my initial submission, and I’m expecting the email from the second campaign any day now.

So fast forward to the VoxBox!  I was recently selected for a free product trial kit, the “Nuture VoxBox” – full of goodies for moms.  Here’s a run-down of what was included:

Hada Labo Tokyo Ultimate Anti-Aging Facial Mask

Uncle Ben’s Coupon – FREE Product up to $2.00

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen – Sensitive & Sport

Dramamine Non-Drowsy Naturals

Red Vines

Ore-Ida Coupon for FREE Product – Extra Crispy Easy Golden Crinkles, Extra Crispy Tater Tots, or Extra Crispy Easy Golden Fries

ATTITUDE Hair Care – Shampoo for Volume and Shine

The Red Vines are pretty popular around here today, and I can’t wait to try the shampoo. 🙂  I also thought it was pretty cool that a frozen food manufacturer got on board by sending a coupon for a free product.

I have posted a YouTube unboxing video, so if you’d like to see the VoxBox for yourself, it’s here.  I decided after uploading it that I want to keep my other hobbies separate from SweetMamaKaty’s Place.  I have the new channel created, and will get the video moved over or re-uploaded if that’s what it takes.  All that to say, you’re welcome to subscribe over there, just know I’ll be moving SweetMamaKaty’s Place to its own channel shortly.

If you’re interested in becoming an “Influenster” like me, check it out here!  I hope you’ve found this post helpful, and if so please also consider subscribing to my blog for more informative write-ups! 🙂

Disclaimer:  I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

The site that started it all…

And really, still is one of my biggest earning sites – swagbucks.com This is a well-established rewards program that really pays, for everything from completing surveys, to using apps, playing games, watching videos, shopping rewards… well, you get the idea.  In my opinion, anyone who says Swagbucks doesn’t work isn’t doing it right. 😉  I have earned an average of $83/month with Swagbucks since I joined.  That’s an average of course, so some months were less, and some (CHA-CHING) were more.  I usually cash out for PayPal or Amazon, but there are loads of choices in the rewards store. I should add, this has been primarily accomplished for FREE.  Yes, I occasionally do a paid special offer if it’s something that interests me or that I would buy anyway, but that’s only been a very small percentage of my earnings.  I think one of the biggest misconceptions about earning big with Swagbucks is that you have to spend money on the special offers, but it’s simply not true. The other thing to remember, with Swagbucks or any other program for that matter, is that if you’re not “feeling it” on a certain day, that’s ok.  It will take some time to find your groove, and the parts of the site that you really enjoy working.  Everyone’s perfect picture of how to do it is different, but everyone can be successful! Lately, my focus has been on the six Swagbucks apps for Android.  Once I had them installed and created my favorites lists within each one, the day-to-day operation became very straightforward (and honestly, super “easy-money” as long as there are no unexpected technology issues). Another top tip for success is to find a Swagbucks group to follow, either on Facebook, Reddit, or your favorite forum.  Posters are happy to share which surveys and offers worked or didn’t, which saves YOU the time of heading down possible dead ends.  You can also contribute to the group when you have tips to share. This is just the tip of the iceberg. 😉  If you have any specific questions you’d like to ask, please feel free to contact me.  I’m happy to help.
